Why You Feel Stuck: Your Brain’s Filter Hides Opportunity

Are you navigating a significant life transition—retirement, career change, or rediscovering your identity? Do you have a strong desire for a purposeful, joyful next chapter, yet you still feel stuck, scattered, or a little adrift?

I know the frustration of having great intentions but not being able to gain traction. Then I learned about the neuroscience of goal setting. If you’re feeling stuck, the problem likely isn’t your capability—it’s that your brain is running on autopilot, and it’s blocking the very opportunities you want to see.

The Neuroscience of Autopilot: Your Brain’s Secret Filter

The RAS is your brain's secret filter.

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is your brain’s secret filter.

For the most part, we all operate on autopilot. This small but mighty part of your brain automatically sifts and sorts incoming data, filtering out what’s unimportant from your conscious awareness and allowing through only what you’ve declared to be important.

Imagine yourself in a noisy coffee shop or pub, and you hear someone calling your name. Your RAS is the reason you can hear someone calling your name over all the noise.

Or, think of it this way: If you decide you want to buy a red sedan, suddenly you see red sedans everywhere. It’s not that suddenly more cars are on the road—it’s that your RAS has been instructed to filter out the noise (all the silver trucks and blue minivans) and present you with what you declared to be important.

The same principle applies to your goals:

  • If your deepest, unacknowledged focus is on doubt or the weight of your old expectations, the RAS shows you problems and resistance.

  • If your focus is on a vibrant, actionable vision of your purpose, the RAS begins scanning your environment for opportunities, people, and information related to that goal, making your next step feel clear and obvious.

If you are feeling stuck, it means your powerful RAS is simply running on old, outdated instructions.

The Vision Board as a Holistic Tool—It’s More Than Just Pictures

A Vision Board can be more than just pictures.

Consider the idea that a vision board is more than a fun, feel-good craft project. In truth, it is a powerful scientific tool designed to give your RAS new marching orders. By moving your vision from a dream in your head to a tangible image and a heartfelt declaration, you send a clear, combined cognitive and emotional signal to your subconscious.

But for this signal to work, you must also engage the body and the heart. This is the holistic key that moves you from a temporary fix—or fun craft project—to a lasting reset.

Engaging the Body with Qigong: Flow not Force

Engage the RAS with qigong.

Your brain’s ability to focus on opportunity is dependent on your physical state.

When you are stressed, your body activates the sympathetic nervous system—also known as the fight-or-flight response.

In this state, your brain defaults to a protective and fearful response.

It literally may not see a new career path, an exciting travel opportunity, or financial stability because it is too busy looking for danger.

Qigong isn’t exercise; it’s energy mastery. Practices like qigong use gentle, integrated movements and intentional breathing to calm your nervous system. By creating an inner reservoir of energy (qi), you signal to your brain that you are safe. When the body is calm, the mind is clear, and the RAS is free to focus on opportunity instead of chaos. The vision board becomes an activation tool, not just an inspiration board.

Engage Your Heart in the Process Through Unshakeable Self-Acceptance

Use compassion to help you reset your RAS.

It’s quite possible that when you declare your audacious goal, a part of your brain whispers, “You don’t know enough,” or “You’re just being selfish.”

This inner critic can be so loud that your subconscious feels unworthy of receiving the joy and purpose you desire, causing your RAS to simply ignore your instructions.

Compassion is the ultimate mindset tool. By cultivating self-appreciation and self-acceptance, you eliminate the emotional resistance and pervasive guilt that block your desired purpose. When you feel worthy of the joy and vitality you seek, you give your RAS permission to find it.

This body-mind-emotion integration—the heart of my BodyMind IntelliSense approach—is the ultimate self-mastery. It ensures that the goal you set is backed by and grounded in your physical and emotional truth.
