“In nature, water is fluid, formless, soft, yet it has the power to erode… The soft can overcome the hard. The supple can outlast the stiff.” — Lao Tzu
I want to ask you a question about the texture of your week.
When you look back at the last seven days—the social commitments, the family logistics, the emails, the workouts—what was the quality of the energy you used to get through it?
Specifically, what was your ratio of forcing vs. flowing?
We often confuse these two states.
We think that if we are getting things done, we must be in flow. But productivity can happen in both states.
The difference isn’t the output; the difference is the cost to your nervous system.
Defining Force
Force is the energy of “making it happen” at all costs.
Somatically, force feels like powering through. It is the sensation of pushing a heavy boulder uphill. If you stop pushing for even a second, you are afraid the boulder will roll back and crush you.
In your body, force shows up as:
-
A tight jaw or clenched teeth (bruxism).
-
Shallow, chest-based breathing.
-
Shoulders that hunch up by your ears.
-
A constant, low-level hum of adrenaline.
When you are in a state of force, your social self is driving the bus. You are performing, perfecting, and pleasing.
You are doing things because you feel you have to, not because you want to.
Don’t get me wrong—force is effective. It gets the project finished. It gets the kids fed. But it burns a fuel that is dirty and expensive. It leaves behind the exhaust fumes of exhaustion, resentment, and burnout.
Defining Flow
Flow, on the other hand, is the energy of “allowing things to happen.”
Flow does not mean being lazy, passive, or ineffective. You can work incredibly hard while being in flow. Athletes break world records in flow. CEOs lead massive companies in flow.
But somatically, flow feels like gliding.
In your body, flow shows up as:
-
A relaxed belly and dropped shoulders.
-
Deep, diaphragmatic breathing.
-
A sense of grounding through the feet.
-
A quiet, clear mind.
When you are in flow, you are moving with the current, not against it. You are tapping into your essential self—the part of you that knows your value isn’t tied to your productivity.
My Old Ratio: 90/10
For much of my life, my operating ratio was 90% Force / 10% Flow.
I prided myself on being a high achiever. I got things done. To the outside world, I looked successful. But inside, I was running on an engine of anxiety. I believed that if I relaxed my grip, my entire life would fall apart.
I treated flow as a reward I would get someday—after the work was done, after the retirement, after the list was empty.
But the list is never empty.
Living in 90% force is not sustainable. Eventually, the body says “No.” This is where autoimmune issues, chronic fatigue, and emotional meltdowns enter the picture. The body forces you to stop because you wouldn’t stop yourself. I know this from personal experience.
How to Flip the Ratio
Today, I try to flip that ratio. My goal is to live in 90% Flow / 10% Force.
And believe me, it takes effort. My old patterns like to hang on tight. When stress hits, my default setting is still to clench, push, and force.
But now, I have the tools to notice it.
This shift—moving from an engine of anxiety to an engine of vitality—is exactly what we practice in BodyMind IntelliSense. It isn’t about changing what you do (you still have to go to work and pay bills); it is about changing how you do it.
A Micro-Practice for Today
If you recognize yourself in the description of force, don’t judge it. That tension is simply your body trying to protect you. It is a survival strategy that worked for a long time.
But if you want to shift the ratio, you can’t do it by forcing yourself to relax—that’s just more force!
You do it by signaling safety to your nervous system.
Try this:
- Pause. Stop what you are doing for 10 seconds.
- Ground. Feel your feet on the floor. Wiggle your toes. Remind your body that you are supported by the earth.
- Exhale. Inhale deeply, then exhale slowly and for a length of time longer than your inhale.
This simple sequence interrupts the pattern of force and invites a micro-moment of flow.
Where are you right now? Are you at 50/50? Or are you stuck in 90% force? Or perhaps you’re even experiencing 90% flow!
The journey to vitality starts with simply noticing the ratio.
