Tanzania: The Primal Rhythm of the Wild

A 13-Day Small-Group Somatic Safari & Adventure | Northern Circuit

September 13 – 25, 2027

Limited to 12 Travelers | Deposit Secures Your Space

In the cradle of humanity, your nervous system remembers how to rest.

Modern life runs on artificial urgency, cognitive overload, and constant doing. The Serengeti operates on a primal rhythm: nothing rushes, yet everything gets done.

This 13-day adventure is not a standard sightseeing vacation or an exhausting sprint across the savannah. It is a deliberate somatic immersion into life’s original way of being. We step off the daily treadmill, enter expansive landscapes where nature is undeniably in charge, and use the biological power of awe to settle the nervous system and release chronic tension.

“Amy put together an extraordinary trip of a lifetime. We were challenged both physically and spiritually, but in a way that allowed all of us to be successful and fulfilled. The trip exceeded my expectations in all aspects.” Cathy H

“Amy provides practical meditation and qigong instruction and brings participants on a reflective journey . . . Amy’s emphasis on the inward and outward radiance of compassion is life-changing.” Marty P

Why Travel Somatically?

Most wildlife safaris keep you trapped in your head—racing between game sightings, collecting photos, and returning home more physically depleted than when you left.

Traveling somatically means engaging your senses, connecting with your body, honoring your natural biorhythms, and letting the landscape open your heart and soul. You will return home not only with photographs, but with a vital, embodied memory of internal quiet and a practical somatic toolkit you can access for the rest of your life.

  • Build Resilience through Awe: The word “safari” comes from Swahili and means “journey.” We explore external landscapes to nurture our inner ones. Standing beneath ancient baobab trees or gazing across the Serengeti’s endless plains activates our biological awe response. Neuroscience shows that experiencing awe interrupts the brain’s internal chatter, lowers systemic adrenaline, and restores emotional resilience.
  • Observing Effortless Action: Spend nine days in world-class parks and preserves. Rather than racing to check off the “big five,” we take time to observe animal intelligence. Witnessing the quiet patience of a sleeping lion or the impressive presence of an elephant herd encourages you to embody a slower way of being.
See leopards on the Tanzania spiritual tour.
  • Indigenous Interaction: Spend time with the members of the Chagga (farmers), Hadzabe (hunter-gatherers), and Datoga (warriors) tribes. By engaging with ways of life that have thrived for millennia without modern technology, you gain a powerful perspective on what is truly essential for joy and vitality.
  • Daily Qigong: Each day we’ll practice intentional movement and breathwork—foundational elements of qigong—often in the open air. Harmonizing with nature helps us calm our often overactive nervous systems.

Your Adventure, Day by Day:

This view of Kilimanjaro greets you from our first night's hotel.

Day 1 ~ Sept 13: Board your flight to Tanzania, landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), arriving on the 14th.

Day 2 ~ Sept 14: Upon arrival, private ground transportation takes you to our quiet base at the Stella Maris Hotel, our home for two nights, in the nearby town of Moshi. Use the first evening in Tanzania to help your body to adjust to the time change, hydrate, and release the residual stress of long-haul travel.

Day 3 ~ Sept 15 (B/L/D): Today, we begin our travels with a local day tour immersing ourselves in local culture and landscape. After breakfast, we’ll head to nearby Materuni village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and visit a local COFFEE PLANTATION. We’ll experience the entire coffee-making process, from harvesting and shelling to roasting, grinding, brewing, and drinking. Afterward, we take an unhurried, moderate two-hour walk through lush mountain foothills to the beautiful MATERUNI WATERFALL. During the day, we’ll find space in nature to learn the essence of qigong and spend some time moving. Dinner at Stella Maris.

Elephant herds are a feature of Tarangire National Park

Day 4 ~ Sept 16 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll travel from Moshi to TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK, arriving for a full afternoon of wildlife viewing. This dramatic wilderness is dotted with towering BAOBAB TREES that stand like quiet sentinels over the savannah. The Tarangire River serves as the primary water source for enormous concentrations of wildlife. You may see legendary elephant herds, along with zebras, giraffes, lions, and leopards. It is a peaceful, deeply grounding environment that helps you harmonize with nature’s raw rhythm. We’ll spend the night at Angata Tarangire Camp or similar.

Day 5 ~ Sept 17 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we will enjoy a morning game drive through TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK, before transitioning to the LAKE EYASI region, located on the floor of the GREAT RIFT VALLEY. The Lake Eyasi region is an anthropological haven, home to two fascinating indigenous communities whose traditions have beautifully endured over time. This wild, remote, and shallow soda lake receives only a tiny fraction of typical safari visitors, offering quiet isolation and uninterrupted space. As we explore, we’ll find time and space to practice qigong during the day. We’ll spend the night at Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge, or similar.

Members of the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes

Day 6 ~ Sept 18 (B/L/D): Rise for an early breakfast, then we’ll begin the day’s cultural adventure, where we’ll visit two lesser-known Tanzanian tribes. First, we’ll meet the HADZABE—considered by some experts to be the oldest continuing ethnicity in the world and one of the last true hunter-gatherer communities on earth. They speak a rhythmic click-based language and have lived in seamless balance with the environment for over 10,000 years. Next, we’ll meet the DATOGA, skilled farmers and master metal craftsmen, known for their arrowheads and brass jewelry. After a picnic lunch, we’ll journey to the Karatu highlands, and depending on our arrival time, we’ll have time in the afternoon for qigong and a chance to share the day’s impressions. Overnight: Marera Valley Lodge or similar.

Day 7 ~ Sept 19 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll set out to explore the vast expanse of the SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK. On our way into the park, we’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site OLDUVAI GORGE in the Great Rift Valley. Recognized as the cradle of mankind, this paleontological site preserves evidence of human habitation dating back nearly two million years. Walking where human life first found its footing offers an expansive sense of perspective. After our visit to the gorge, we’ll head to the vast Serengeti savannah to spot wildlife and take in the landscape’s sheer scale before settling into our home for the next three nights. Overnight: Moyo Tented Camp or similar.

Zebras in the Serengeti

Day 8 ~ Sept 20 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll spend an unhurried, full day viewing wildlife in the SERENGETI, with a focus on the southeastern section of the Serengeti. Perhaps we’ll see lions resting in total muscular slackness on sun-warmed rocks, illustrating what true recovery looks like in the natural world. As with yesterday, we’ll be out all day, but we’ll make time for a picnic lunch and some qigong so we can harmonize directly with the beautiful, expansive plains around us. We’ll return to our tent camp around sunset for dinner and an evening of relaxation and conversation. Overnight: Moyo Tented Camp or similar.

Day 9 ~ Sept 21 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll head out for another full and expansive day of SERENGETI WILDLIFE VIEWING. Today we’ll head to a region of the Serengeti filled with granite rock outcroppings, including the spectacular Moru Kopjes. Rather than rushing between sightings, our driver/guides position our vehicles for extended, patient observation.

Wildebeest migration on the Tanzania Spiritual Adventure Tour with Amy Pattee Colvin

Day 10 ~ Sept 22 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll head to the northern part of the Serengeti, the Kogatende region, and spend time along the Mara River in hopes of seeing the WILDEBEEST MIGRATION. The seasonal migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti’s wildebeest, in company with large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of impala, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, and eland. As with yesterday, we’ll be out all day, but may find some time for qigong so we can harmonize directly with the beautiful, expansive plains around us. We’ll finish the evening at our camp, where we’ll spend two nights. Overnight: Moyo Migration Camp or similar.

Lioness after feeding on a wildebeest in the northern Serengeti

Day 11 ~ Sept 23 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we’ll continue to explore the Kogatende northern region of the Serengeti, once again hoping to sight the WILDEBEEST MIGRATION along the Mara River. The wildebeest migration provides an excellent opportunity to view predators feasting on prey. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word siringet, meaning “the place where the land runs on forever.” As with yesterday, we’ll be out all day, but may find some time for qigong so we can harmonize directly with the beautiful, expansive plains around us. Overnight: Moyo Migration Camp or similar.

Wildlife in the Serengeti on the Tanzania Spiritual Adventure Tour with Amy Pattee Colvin

Day 12 ~ Sept 24 (B/L/D): After breakfast, we journey back south through the heart of the SERENGETI toward the Ngorongoro conservation area. The diversity and multitude of wildlife species in this huge protected area are unrivaled anywhere on the planet. This travel day gives us a chance to spend one final day harmonizing with the energy around us: the landscapes and the wildlife. Although we’ll be out all day, we’ll look for a quiet spot to practice qigong. In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our tent camp and enjoy dinner together. Overnight: Angata Ngorongoro Camp or similar.

Ngorongoro crater wildlife.

Day 13 ~ Sept 25 (B/L): After an early breakfast, we descend 2,000 feet into the unbroken caldera of the NGORONGORO CRATER. The Ngorongoro caldera is formed from the walls of an ancient collapsed volcano that was probably once the size of Mount Kilimanjaro. This ancient volcanic amphitheater supports a year-round micro-ecosystem home to a diverse array of wildlife. After a morning of exploration, we ascend the crater walls and travel back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for evening flights home, carrying a sense of inner peace and vitality as we head back to our homes and everyday lives.

Note: I took all the photos on this page on similar safaris. They’re realistic examples of what you may find on this journey.

Somatic Tour Facilitator Amy Pattee Colvin:

Amy Pattee Colvin leads international spiritual tours with a focus on meditation, qigong, and compassion for self and others.

I have spent more than 30 years practicing meditation and 15 years teaching qigong, helping people step off the striving treadmill and settle their nervous systems through body-centered awareness.

Traveling with me is entirely different from a standard vacation or an exhausting sprint across the savannah. We don’t just observe the landscape; we harmonize with it. I guide these journeys with a toolkit built from two worlds: the practical lineage of Taoist philosophy and qigong, combined with the science-backed protocols of Stanford University’s Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT).

My role is to take care of every logistical detail so you can drop your shoulders, quiet your analytical mind, and allow the primal rhythm of the wild to restore your natural vitality.

Investment & Registration:

  • Double Occupancy: $6450 per person

  • Single Supplement: $1150 (strictly limited based on lodge allocations)

  • Deposit: A $1,000 deposit is required to reserve your space, with the balance due by June 1st, 2027.

Note on Value & Conservation: A significant portion of your tour investment flows directly to Tanzanian conservation fees, park authorities, and indigenous community trusts. These resources actively preserve ancestral Hadzabe and Datoga territories and support anti-poaching initiatives across the Serengeti ecosystem.

Registration Process:

Because our roster is limited to 12 travelers, spaces are filled on a first-confirmed basis:

  • Email Directly: Send a brief message to confirming your interest and lodging preference (single or shared). If you register as an individual willing to share, I will match you with another person of the same gender.
  • Deposit: Once space is confirmed, we will discuss payment options for your deposit. I offer several payment methods for your convenience. Fee-Free Methods (Preferred): Zelle, Venmo, ACH Bank Transfer, Personal Check. I also accept all major credit cards and PayPal. Please note that a 3% processing fee applies to these transactions.
  • Welcome Packet: Once I receive your deposit, I’ll send a Tanzania Travel Handbook with all the details you need (packing lists, gear recommendations, visa steps, and medical guidelines).
  • Flexible Payment: Payment plans are available. Please inquire if necessary.
  • Cancellation Policy: Your deposit is fully refundable until 6 months prior to departure. After that, you may transfer it to another tour.
